That sounds pretty big for a little lemon.
German purveyors of strange but likeable music, Off Label Records, is putting out VulgarGrad’s first release since 2009′s King of Crooks. Release date to be confirmed, but it’ll be an as-yet-unreleased recording of that classic old Odessa song about stealing, “Limonchiki”. Stay tuned for details!

VulgarGrad will finally be making it into the Northern Hemisphere this European winter. The band will be dragging their ball-and-chain through Northern and Eastern Europe in January and February next year, and will be packing the thickest telnyashki they can find. You just never know where or when VulgarGrad are going to turn up next, sweeping down from the frozen north on wings of barbed wire and tattered Russian songbooks. Wednesday, 13 July at the Northcote Social Club is one of those rare occasions, and it’s seriously the last time they’ll be playing their raucous Russian criminal folk-punk-ska in Melbourne this year. Jacek Koman and the gang then go back to the jailhouse to practice for their inaugural European tour later in 2011. In an incredibly special event, you get not just one shot of wild Russian tunes, but THREE. Joining VulgarGrad on the bill for the first time are the new kids on the gulag, Blunderbus – fronted by Melbourne’s very own Siberian fugitive, Misha Doumnov – along with DJ Russian Disco, pumping out bizarre dance tunes from all of the most obscure corners of Europe and the former Soviet Empire.

VulgarGrad at Fed Square, 27 March

VulgarGrad’s last Melbourne gig for the foreseeable future (though we are notoriously short-sighted) is happening next Sunday, 27 March at Federation Square, as part of Viva Victoria Festival. See here for more details. VulgarGrad will be on at 2.30 in the afternoon on the main stage. Lots of other fine acts are also performing on the day, including the brilliant Bombay Royale and Dereb the Ambassador.
Speaking of amazing musicians who have come to call Melbourne home, Russian-born ARIA-winning singer Zulya - a long-time VulgarGrad collaborator – will also be giving her last Melbourne concert for a while. With her incredible band, The Children of the Underground, Zulya will be performing at Revolt in Kensington on Saturday 26 March, supported by The Twoks. Details here. This may be the last time you can see Zulya perform for a while, and certainly the first, last, and only time you will see the expanded line-up of the Children of the Underground: Anthony Schulz on piano accordion, Eamon McNelis on trumpet, Lucas Michailidis on guitar, Justin Marshall on drums and Andrew Tanner on double bass. Should be an amazing evening!
